Mount Abang sits on the edge of Lake Batur, facing Mount Batur across the water, in the Bangli region of northeast Bali. It a dormant volcano with the third tallest peak on the island and the tallest jungle mountain, its slopes covered in natural rainforest. Abang was once part of Batur, but was separated by an enormous volanic eruption in prehistoric times.

Mount Abang is not as famous or as well-trodden as Mount Agung or Mount Batur, and is therefore much less disturbed by human development. The path to the summit has a few Balinese temples along the way, as local Balinese Hindus often come to the mountain to pray.
